It is a common thing that happens in churches especially with sound equipment. For example, we had a church sound system once that comprised of 2 generic loudspeakers which struggled to reproduce any bass. I decided to take in a couple of subwoofers to demonstrate how much more control you would have over the band and what clarity you would gain from using subwoofers.
Instantly as soon as people started coming into the hall, a few went straight to the sound man to show their displeasure and concern for the days sound. Through their minds they saw a big subwoofer and instantly thought excessive bass.. but that is not the case.
Often people will become concerned when they see something new and big and instantly think trouble. The equipment will only do what the sound operator chooses it to do. During the service there was a noticeable improvement using the subwoofers. The band was under more control with the sound engineer having control of the bass and the overall sound had a wider range! Of course at the end of the service there were a number of compliments and the church purchased a couple of subwoofers soon after!

Yes subwoofers may look big and scary, but they are the perfect addition for many systems. In 2018, we installed 5 JBL AV25 speakers into a church along with 2 18" subwoofers that sat upstairs. Both sets of speakers working together gave an excellent full range sound.
