Are your radio mics legal?

This is one thing we check at every church we attend. Back in 2012, you may remember that analogue TV was switched off for good with digital TV replacing it. That's not the only thing that happened! The frequency spectrum also changed meaning that radio microphones would have a much narrower band to operate on.

Post 2012, you are now only able to use a wireless microphone between the frequencies of 863mhz - 865mhz leaving you with 2mhz breathing room. Strictly speaking, you can run 4 radio microphone between these frequencies without issue. The only problem with using the free band is that you are more likely to be subject to interference from other users. Any older microphones operating below 863mhz would now be illegal to use.

So what if you want to use more than 4 microphones or In Ear Monitors? Post 2012, you can now use the new Channel 38 microphone frequencies for a yearly or bi yearly fee. Channel 38 operates between 606-614mhz which gives you 8mhz headroom to play with allowing you to use many more microphones within this frequency at one time. Licences are available online from Ofcom known as a PMSE licence with 1 year being £75 & 2 years being £135 (prices correct at time of publication).

How do I check the frequency I am currently using? You should have small screen on the front of your receiver or on your microphone which shows a frequency (i.e. 863.100mhz). If not then check on your receiver as your frequency may be found on a label stuck underneath or on the back of the unit. If you are in any doubt, feel free to contact us to find out if you are legal.
